How to check if a Fortnite display name is available
Last updated
A display name check asks Epic whether a name change would be accepted. Here is how that works, and how to read the result without getting caught out.
What the check actually does
Your Fortnite display name is the name other players see. When you type a name into Fortnite Sniper, it asks Epic whether a change to that display name would be accepted. If Epic would accept it, the result is available. If someone already holds it, or Epic would reject it, the result is taken or invalid.
Check a name step by step
- Create a free account. The free plan scans 5-letter names and includes 2 available hits.
- Enter the name you want. Display names are 3 to 16 characters long.
- Read the result. Only a name that comes back available uses a hit. Taken names, invalid names, errors and retries are free.
- If it is available, open Epic and change your display name there. Fortnite Sniper does not rename accounts for you.
An available result is not a reservation
Available means free at the moment of the check. Another player can take it a minute later. Because Fortnite Sniper never creates accounts or holds names, you need to act on an available result yourself and quickly.
Checking several names
You can check one name, a short bulk list or a pattern. Starter allows a bulk of 10. If you are not ready to pay, save the name to a watchlist and get notified when it opens up.
Why checks are rate limited
Epic rate-limits this kind of lookup, so Fortnite Sniper waits between live calls and stops when Epic asks it to slow down. See the FAQ for the details on limits and hits.
