OG Fortnite names: how to go after a short display name
Last updated
Short, clean display names are the ones everybody wants. Here is a realistic approach to finding one.
What counts as an OG name
An OG name usually means a very short or simple display name, such as a real word, a short handle or a name with few characters. Fortnite display names run from 3 to 16 characters, and the shorter and simpler a name is, the more people have wanted it for longer.
Why they are hard to get
Most short names are already in use, and a taken name stays taken until its owner changes it. There is no waiting list, so the only way in is to catch one when it opens up.
A practical approach
- Start with a list. Write down the names you would actually be happy with, not only the shortest ones.
- Check them in bulk. Taken names cost nothing, so a wide first pass is cheap. Only an available name uses a hit.
- Watch the best ones. Save your favourites to the watchlist and let the timer do the looking. See name alerts.
- Be ready to act. When the alert arrives, open Epic and change the name at once.
What to avoid
Be careful with anyone offering to sell you a short name or an account with one. The marketplace rules explain what sellers must follow, and listings for stolen, hacked or cracked accounts are not allowed. You can browse the marketplace to see what is listed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wait in line for an OG name?
No. A taken name only frees up when its owner changes it, so watching and acting fast is the only route.
Do taken names cost hits?
No. Only a name that comes back available uses a hit.
